As the calendar turns from 2023 to 2024, there is no denying winter is in full swing. With the chaos of the holidays, you may not have had a chance to winterize your home yet but make sure you add it to the to do list. These simple tasks will ensure you don’t have any unforeseen costs brought on by cold and snow. 

INDOORS

  1. Replace furnace filters and change monthly 
  2. Get your furnace checked out to make sure it is in good working condition.
  3. Install or test carbon monoxide detectors 
  4. Secure dryer vents and intakes to prevent animals from entering your home 5. Reverse your ceiling fans. Fans moving in the clockwise direction recirculate heat instead of pushing cold air down. 
  5. Install weatherstrip where needed. Inspect all windows and doors for a draft. If there is a leak, find the source and seal it. 
  6. Insulate air ducts 
  7. Have curtains or blinds on windows to keep heat inside 
  8. Add insulation to the attic if needed 
  9. If you can, buy a smart thermostat to save on heating costs 
  10. Make sure vents are free and clear from any furniture 
  11. Replace summer bedding with flannel sheets and heavy blankets

OUTDOORS

  1. Clear out gutters 
  2. Insulate exposed plumbing 
  3. Learn where your main water shutoff is in case of emergencies 
  4. Clean and cover air conditioning units 
  5. Check roof to ensure it is fully functional 
  6. Trim trees and cut down branches, especially those close to the house. 7. Get a blanket for your water heater if it is in the garage 
  7. Drain oil and gas from lawn mower 
  8. Stock up on salt, shovels, snow blower and other equipment you may need in case of heavy snowfall. 
  9. Drain garden hoses and store in the garage 
  10. Bring any plants inside 
  11. Store outside appliances in the garage if possible (like the grill)
