What is a Soffit and what does it do?
Soffit is the piece of wood directly under the overhang of the roof that connects to the house. Your soffit is not only there for aesthetics, it also serves a purpose. The soffit’s main job is to protect your homes rafters from the weather.
What happened to my Soffit?
Soffit damage could be caused by an overflow of water from the gutters, possible leak from the roof shingles or just wear and tear overtime. The more damaged spots are often due to the roof edge breaking down causing water to get through the fascia and landing on the soffit.
When and why the Soffit needs to be repaired?
Soffits need to be fixed as soon as you start to see signs of deterioration. Since soffits are your rafters only line of defense against the weather it is imperative to repair the damaged spots. If you wait to repair these problem areas you risk further damage with wood rot effecting your rafters.
How to fix it?
We suggest replacing the problem areas with PVC board. Aesthetically PVC looks identical to wood. PVC board is a composite material that will not rot, making it perfect for high moisture areas such as soffits. Anytime we perform a soffit repair at a customers home we always use PVC board. This is so that our customers never have to worry about the area rotting again.
