What is Wood Rot?
Wood rot is rotting wood on, inside or around your house. Whether it's treated or protected, wood rot is inevitable. It commonly happens when a house is around 12-17 years old.
It starts to show faster in places like rake boards (near the roof), around doors, windows, bathrooms and decks. Sometimes it's due to bad flashing, poor design or the wood has simply maxed out its life. You can spot these problem areas by periodically examining your home.
You want to get these areas fixed as soon as you start seeing signs of rot. A lot of wood rot leads to bigger problems and repairs, such as structural damage, instability and leaks within the home. All of this increases the cost of repairs the longer you wait. This is why it's important to spot these problem areas early. Early detection will save you money, time and headaches.
What can you do to repair wood rot? And how does New Leaf repair wood rot?
We recommend demoing or taking out the rotting wood. A good way of determining what to take out is the screwdriver test. Take a screwdriver and poke the wood. If the screwdriver easily inserts into the wood then that piece is compromised. If there is structural damage, replace that soft section with treated lumber. We recommend covering that section with PVC board and caulk. If the piece is not structural, we recommend replacing the piece with a composite material such as PVC.
Whether you choose to fix rotting wood in your home yourself or decide to hire a pro to fix it, don't wait!
