Why is your exterior door important?
Your exterior door greets family, friends, and neighbors. The most important job of an exterior door is to keep unwanted guests out. A sturdy exterior door protects your home and family from burglary or more dangerous crimes. Not only that but a door protects your home from the elements, you don’t want the wind or rain to walk in your door unexpected, so you want your front door to be sturdy and be able to handle anything.
What happened to my exterior door?
Overtime the door goes through a lot of basic wear and tear. Without proper maintenance the door looses its seals such as caulk line. Water gets behind the door trim and begins to rot the interior wood. Usually people wait too long to have this issue addressed and the rot spreads to the structural parts of the door such as the framing and the sub floor under the door.
When and why the exterior door needs to be repaired?
The door should be repaired asap, you don’t want it to be weak. Wood rot around the exterior door could cause it to lose strength and stability, allowing the door to be more susceptible to someone gaining entry. The longer you wait also causes the cost of repairs to go up due to the wood rot spreading.
How to fix it?
If the issue is caught early, usually you can replace the trim and seal it back up. If it is too late you will have to take the door off and replace all of the structural damage. Then you will have to replace the trim and seal it. We recommend replacing the trim with PVC Board. PVC is non rotting material and is a great replacement for wood in area that are susceptible to moisture.
